(01) Our take

Neon is our pick for Postgres when we need branching workflows — database-per-preview-deployment, database-per-test-run, that kind of thing. The branching model is a genuine innovation and it's changed how we structure some engagements.

The serverless pricing model can work in your favour for applications with bursty traffic, but we've seen it bite on consistent-load applications. We benchmark before committing for any workload where database cost is a material line item.

(02) What we build with it

Typical work

  • Preview deployments with database branching
  • CI/CD pipelines that need isolated database state per test run
  • Bursty-traffic applications where serverless pricing is favourable
  • Multi-tenant applications with per-tenant database branches

(03) How we engage

Engagement shape

Usually chosen at the start of a greenfield project where the branching model informs the development workflow.
